Good posture

Good posture and why its important

Good posture is about more than standing up straight so you can look your best. It is an important part of your long-term health. Making sure that you hold your body the right way, whether you are moving or still, can prevent pain, injuries, and other health problems.

Here is the transcript for the video:

Welcome back to Relax For Life. Today I’m going to be talking about posture. Got my spine here as when you look posture it is something that when you look at, it’s all about rounded shoulders, head poking out etc but when you break it down it is a spinal issue. When we look at posture from the side what we’re aiming to do is have everything stacked upon each other. When we look at engineering in bridges there’s curves and arcs to keep us in alignment and to keep structures strong. We have these curves in our spine to help the muscles do their job to help move us create a nice neck curve. Most of us have an incorrect neck curve due to us sitting at computers and our devices due to constantly looking down. We need to correct the neck curve to its correct position as the muscles are going to get ultra tight, winding up with a sore neck at the base, sore shoulders and the tightness also causes headaches. When looking at the thoracic spine (mid spine) we should have a rounded curve to the back, which is often flat or ultra curved which is caused by being hunched back. These are balance issues between the front and back muscles caused by sitting to much at our desk and not getting up and stretching. Further down is the lumbar spine which should be another curve forward and often is an imbalance between front and rear muscles which helps keep and back straight and structurally sound. Posture is not a static thing, patients come into the clinic saying they have terrible posture, but once I look at their posture it is not too bad, posture is about how we move through space. The ability to hold posture consciously is very difficult to do. Another video down the track we will talk about how to balance up the front and rear muscles but for the purpose of today’s video I want you to look at yourself in the mirror. Have a look at how you are standing from the side. Is your head forward, is your shoulders rounded? Is your backside poking outwards? All these little things, if any of that is happening, keep your eyes peeled for the next set of videos on posture and stretching and make some changes accordingly. Or even better, see your local practitioner to give you a set of stretching and exercises down the track. Hope you have enjoyed todays edition. Don’t get too stressed about your posture, it is something that can be fixed and it’s not hereditary. You can fix it and I will show you how.
